How to Grow – Simple Instructions

What You'll Need

🌿 Growing Containers
You don’t need fancy equipment to grow flowers! Use mini seed trays with domes from garden or hardware stores, or repurpose clean, shallow containers that allow water to drain. Recycled pots and plant trays work perfectly.

🪴 Seed Raising Mix & Vermiculite
Look for seed-raising mix at your local garden centre or hardware store. Vermiculite is optional, but it helps retain moisture and gives seeds a better start.

🖊 Labels
Label everything — it’s surprisingly easy to forget what’s what! Use plastic labels, wooden sticks, or cut up ice cream container lids to make your own.

🌼 When to Sow

Sow from late September to December for a vibrant summer garden.
In most parts of New Zealand, Labour Day (late October) is a good guide for planting out into the garden. All these varieties are frost tender, so wait until your last frost has passed before transplanting.

🌸 Starting Your Seeds

While some seeds can go directly in the ground, starting in containers gives you more control over moisture and temperature.

  1. Fill containers with seed-raising mix and moisten (not soaking).

  2. Press seeds into the surface:

    • Zinnia & Cosmos: lightly cover with a fine layer of soil.

    • Matricaria: leave uncovered — they need light to germinate.

    • Snapdragons & Celosia: lightly cover with vermiculite if available.

  3. Cover with a dome lid or cling film to create humidity.

  4. Place somewhere warm and bright — a sunny windowsill or sheltered porch is perfect.

  5. Water gently to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Use a spray bottle or bottom-water by placing your container in a shallow tray of water.

  6. Remove the cover once seedlings have emerged (usually 5–14 days).

🌱 Planting Out

Once seedlings are 5–8cm tall and have a few sets of true leaves:

  1. Prepare your garden bed with compost or use potting mix in raised beds.

  2. Harden off seedlings by placing them outdoors during the day for about a week.

  3. Plant in full sun, spacing about 20–30cm apart (closer than packet advice is usually fine for cut flowers).

  4. Water well and protect from slugs and snails — snail bait or wool pellets work well.

🌻 Plant Care

  • Water regularly, especially in dry spells.

  • Feed weekly with a liquid fertiliser (seaweed-based ones are great).

  • Pinch back stems when plants are 15–20cm tall to encourage branching and more flowers.

  • Pick often — the more you cut, the more blooms you’ll get!

  • Support taller varieties like snapdragons and cosmos with stakes or let them support each other by planting closely.

💐 Bloom Time

Expect flowers from Summer through to Autumn.
